Smoke was pouring into the sky above a Cape Cod military on Thursday afternoon from a brush fire that officials said started as part of a planned burn.
The fire was burning on the property of Joint Base Cape Cod, the Massachusetts National Guard confirmed. A representative said the blaze moved outside the designated area of the controlled burn — a way to mitigate forest fires — but remained inside the property of the military base.

Bourne fire officials said firefighters traveled from all over the Cape to help, and that assistance from aircraft was requested, as well.

Massachusetts' Department of Fire Services said it sent a rehabilitation unit to the area to help support local crews, and that the Statewide Fire Mobilization Plan was activated, prompting mutual aid from elsewhere.
A forestry task force of firefighters from surrounding departments also responded with water tankers and brush breakers, the department added.
